Roald Dahl prop hunt

by Fellowship Agency June 18, 2018

In celebration of #WorldBookDay and #RoaldDahlDay, we’ve created these prop hunts to allow the students to search for a prop in one tray that’s related to a popular Roald Dahl story. They can then select a range of different words from a second tray that will make up the title of the book that the selected prop relates to.

You will need…

  • Two Deep (F2) Gratnells trays
  • Some shredded tissue paper
  • Different props related to popular Roald Dahl books
    • Trophy
    • Toy mouse
    • Cucumber (snozzcumber)
    • Witches hat
    • Peach
    • Giraffe
    • Medicine bottle
    • Chocolate bar
  • Laminated words that make up the titles of popular Roald Dahl books
    • Danny, The Champion of the World
    • Boy
    • The BFG
    • Witches
    • James and the Giant Peach
    • The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
    • George’s Marvellous Medicine
    • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

What to do…

  • Fill both trays with some shredded tissue paper
  • Laminate different words that make up the different titles of popular Roald Dahl books
  • Source and select a range of props that relate to the different titles of the chosen popular Roald Dahl books
  • In the first tray, bury and hide the different props related to popular Roald Dahl books
  • In the second tray, bury and hide the different laminated words
  • Have the children select a prop from the first tray and set it in front of them
  • They should then proceed to hunt through the second tray for the different words that make up the book title related to their selected prop

Health and Safety

As with all Gratnells Learning Rooms What’s In My Tray activities you should carry out your own risk assessment prior to undertaking any of the activities with children.
