The importance of Makerspace

A Makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a school, library or separate public/private facility for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses high tech to no tech tools.  These spaces are open to children, adults, and entrepreneurs and have a variety of maker equipment. Makerspaces help to prepare those who need the critical 21st century skills in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  They provide hands-on learning, help with critical thinking skills and even boost self-confidence.

The goal of a Makerspace is to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders and creators. A Makerspace allows learning new skills through trial and error, experiencing failure of an initial idea, the exploration of possible alternatives and then problem solving to improve on the idea.  It develops self-confidence and an appreciation for the learner’s own ability to imagine, develop and build tangible projects.
