Finger painted flowers

Want to help your class to treat someone special in their life with a handmade gift or card? Perhaps you want your child to make something personal for their teacher? This #WhatsInMyTray activity is fun, messy play and makes for a lovely present!

Learning outcomes

You will be able to:

  • develop fine motor skills
  • use a range of materials to create a floral design

You will need (per group):

  • Two Shallow (F1) Gratnells Trays
  • A 2×3 Gratnells insert
  • Different coloured paints
  • Textured card
  • Felt tip pens
  • Small pom poms
  • Glue
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Tissue paper
  • Paper/card to make your artwork

What to do:

  • Fill a Gratnells insert with different coloured paints, pom poms and other equipment you may need to make your cards.
  • If you’re making cards, fold your paper and place in another tray. If you’re creating pretty artwork, place your A4 sheet into the tray.
  • Cut a flower pot out of textured card and glue it to the front of the card.
  • Next make some flower stems – these can be drawn or made from scrunched tissue paper or pipe cleaners.
  • Glue small pom poms to the top of the stems to make the middle of the flower.
  • Finger paint the flower petals by dipping your fingertips into the coloured paints and dabbing around the centre of the flowers.

Other things to try…

  • Use the textured card to cut out leaf shapes.
  • Printing with other objects for the petals of the flower.
